42% of the New York households had slaves during the time between the 1600’s-1800’s. In 1827 slavery was abolished in New York however many of the enslaved people Kept their same jobs that paid very little or next to nothing. I imagine it was assumed that a person of his status would have owned slaves back then. Especially, because of the work and responsibilities involved of maintaining property of this size. However, fortunately his name is among those who opposed slavery in the National Administration for the Expansion of Slavery. This is a picture of the New York Inquirer news paper in 1856 with a list of New York citizens who denounced the expansion of slavery. And, Lo and Behold his name is on the this list!!! We know this is our guy because we did extensive research and double checked all the documents, names, and dates. This is a interesting part of history pertaining to our house & the family who once lived here. I found this to be interesting and thought it was worth sharing again. ❤️
